World Firsts For CTP in Oil & Gas Training

Creating a World First in Oil and Gas non-technical skills training, UK-based human factors training and leadership specialist Critical Team Performance (CTP) is set to deliver an innovative new programme based on the pioneering recommended practice in Report 502, just released by the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP). CTP was commissioned by the IOGP to take the leading role in producing Report 502, working over 18 months with global specialists from the forefront of the industry. This innovative new training programme is known as Well Operations Crew Resource Management (WOCRM), a phrase and acronym developed in Report 502 and one that will become widely-known to the industry. The aim of WOCRM is to introduce standardised human factors training that will help minimise human error and create safer, more efficient, incident free operations across Well Operations.
Commented Managing Director of CTP, Phil Smith, “This programme is a World First and we are justifiably proud to be a fundamental part of the human factors revolution within the industry.
Human Factors awareness is at the cutting edge of training interventions within this sector and sharing our understanding of this and our wider experiences of error management in other critical environments, including aviation where human factors began, is key to our role here.”
Tailor-made for the customer, the WOCRM programme is being delivered by CTP off-shore in the
The world’s first off-shore WOCRM programme lasts six months and involves 150 supervisors and senior management personnel across four rigs run by three different drill contractors for a single major operator. It involves two classroom days followed by a period of immersion offshore with the team for seven days of work-place based action coaching and includes at least one 1:1 coaching session for each person. CTP personnel will be shadowing the crews to bring the language of the programme into real life scenarios on the rigs, with a view to inputting to everyday briefings and de-briefs. The programme will also aim to measure retained knowledge gained throughout the learning journey, with the same short questionnaire looking at the crews’ knowledge of non-technical competencies completed by all at the start and conclusion of the programme. There is also likely to be a follow-up review three to four months after the programme is complete.
In terms of on-shore programmes, CTP is delivering the first onshore WOCRM programmes to a major service contractor in
CTP has a rich, diverse experience of working on and offshore in the oil and gas arena and the company’s programmes are also based on transferable knowledge from providing human factors training in commercial aviation, high threat bomb disposal and search, healthcare and the commercial business environment.
