Why are you passionate about excellence?
Typically excellence, similar to success, means different things to different people and I believe the most important passion is to understand the value of things, as too often excellence can be so short lived if its value is not truly understood. So when it is understood I create an insatiable internal drive to help people and organisations achieve excellence, but most importantly in a sustainable way. That feeling of helping people or giving something back is what really motivates me.
Why are you passionate about people development?
Over the years I have tussled with whole concept of people development and particularly why me? Hard won experience has taught me the first thing to get right is thyself before trying to change anybody else. As part of this journey I realised I have a particular talent for helping people at whatever level in whatever they do. I find being in this environment hugely rewarding and get a real buzz out of helping individuals, teams and organisations reach and sustain their true potential.
Which three words sum up leadership for you?
Loyalty – Visionary – Authenticity
Who is your Leadership inspiration and why?
I have many as “one size does not fit all” ranging from senior military officers I have served with over the years such as the current Commandant General of the Royal Marines, Charlie Stickland who has an amazing ability to connect and understand the men and women he commands to business leaders on top of their game like Paul Polman whose visionary leadership and sustainable living plan with Unilever is truly inspirational.
As a highly experienced and qualified leader, executive coach and trainer, Neil’s real passion is unlocking complex leadership, organisational change and people resilience challenges. He has developed his unique style in numerous leadership positions ranging from leading Royal Marine Commandos in high-tempo operations to running complex leadership change programmes across a vast range of sectors from the nuclear industry to international investment banks. He now focuses on enhancing organisational health and resilience by helping people to find their performance and leadership potential.
Having been educated and coached to challenge conventional thinking - and to remain agile, adaptable and responsive – he avoids pre-determined and ‘one size fits all’ theories. He builds rapport quickly and believes in a more holistic approach to improving leadership, enhancing management ability, and getting the best out of people; by building organisational and personal resilience, strong values and an enviable culture.
He is passionate about a people-focused approach to developing organisational effect and is fascinated in what makes people work effectively; how they learn, engage and deliver, and the importance of understanding oneself and being authentic.
Very family orientated, Neil lives with his wife and daughter by the sea in Devon with ‘Oakley’ the Golden Retriever dog. He loves all sports particularly anything on or in water, beach volleyball, skiing, tennis and watching Exeter Chiefs Rugby Team.
